a digital painting of elend venture in his white uniform with a black cloak. the sky is red and ash is falling. he is backlit by the orange and red sun and mist flows around him. the painting has a very crisp and illustrated style with flatter colors and dramatic lighting.

a sketch of the final image, only a few things were edited before it became the final painting.

i love unrealistic dramatic lighting

i finished the first three mistborn books and i wanted to draw elend in his white uniform. i tried adding his beard, but i didn’t like the way it looked. i should have incorporated it from the start, that was my mistake. i’m still getting back into using color and i’m not sure how successful this is as a whole but there are some things that i really like, like the hair and the glow on his face.

a comic page: panel 1- A girl leans over an intricate wrought iron balcony rail overlooking a large room; panel 2- Close up we can see that she is Vin, with short dark hair and a ball gown. She is startled by someone saying "Now, see, here's the problem with going to refill your cup of wine"; panel 3- she turns to see a man, who continues, "You return to find that your favorite spot has been stolen by a pretty girl."; panel 4- elend venture stands with a book in his jacket pocket and holding a glass of wine. " Now, a gentleman would move on to another place, leaving the lady to her contemplations," he says, "However, this is the best spot on the balcony--it's the only place close enough to a lantern to have good reading light."

I’ve been reading the mistborn books by brandon sanderson and i wanted to draw the scene where vin and elend met. not emblematic of the series at all really but i could just see how i wanted to draw it so i did! i had fun imaginging the world and characters, although i don’t think i was able to capture it that well. i have more ideas and hope that i can share some more drawings of them in the future.

i spent way too long on this. i got carried away in details on panel one and then didn’t want to finish the rest. i redrew their outfits because the first pass was just so lazy. then i redid the lettering because i decided i didn’t like the font i chose. ultimately i’m still not satisfied with it but i just want it to be done and published so that i can move on.

it’s frustrating because i used to whip stuff like this out so quickly! but i’m always learning. and i did spend a lot of time on the first panel trying to build a believable environment so that the rest of the page would feel like it had a ‘place.’

historical fashion studies

a couple in dress from the 1830s in europe. the woman is wearing a dress with a v-shaped bodice which exposes the shoulders and nips in at the waist. the skirt is a full bell shape that falls to the floor. her hair is in tight curls on the side of her head and pulled up in the back. flowers decorate her hhair and dress. the man is wearing a jacket with padded shoulders with long tails, a vest, blouse and tie, and plaeted stirrup pants. a couple in dress from the 1850s appropriate to appear at court. the woman is wearing a dress with a vshaped bodice and bell shaped skirt. her hair is pulled back with the sides draped to cover her ears. the man is wearing a fitted jacket with tails over a vest and blouse. his trousers are a pair of breeches which fall to the calf and have a stripe up the sides.

i was drawing a fan comic and wanted to put the characters in historical dress when i realized that i don’t really know that much about historical dress. so, i browsed the met’s digital collection and picked a few pieces to draw. there were so many great pieces that i had a hard time choosing. i’ll definitely be using the digital collection again for inspiration.

head studies of seo dong jae in various styles. also some drawings of hwang si-mok in a cute style with cat ears.

i struggle to adapt live action characters into a consistent style for drawing, so i am trying to practice and see what sticks. stranger is one of my favorite shows so i would really like to be able to draw fanart of it!
