Captain Off Duty

a drawing from much earlier this year, this is Merriwyn Captain of the Royal Gaurd, possibly tipsy after her evening shift.

I am still working on a short comic about Merri, Tove, and Jen, as a kind of conclusion to their character arcs that never even really got started in Lady Knight. This sketch is in relation to that new story, with a new setting, new designs, and new romance.

The Witch

Hello! Happy holidays! I’m back with an original character, The Witch. This project is somewhat personal so I’m not going to share too much about it now, but there will be more illustrations of The Witch and her partner, The Bard. I based her dress on a combination of Italian Rennaisance and Medieval styles, but ultimately it’s fantasy so there are no rules.

My Night With Tina Turner

I recently completed two comic pages for Paul Harrill of Self-Reliant Film. The comic is an autobio peice about his first time seeing Tina Turner live, and a tribute to her influence in his life.

Paul reached out to me because he was interested in exploring making comics and graphic novels. I agreed to produce some comic pages for him, and the process went very smoothly. I enjoyed working from his script and he gave lots of great feedback as I worked.

I was familiar with Tina Turner, but hadn’t spent much time learning about her before this project. I watched performances and collected images of her in Bob Mackie dresses on pinterest for reference. I was a bit intimidated trying to capture her incredible stage presence and energy. I don’t think I quite nailed it, but I am happy with how the pages turned out, and her appearance is definitely the highlight.

A Morbig Longing for the Picturesque at All Costs

I finished this piece up just in time for Halftone ZineFest in May. This illustration sat in my drafts for a long time. I sketched and inked it traditionally, then scanned it and did final edits before digitally coloring it. I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to approach coloring the piece. I wanted to incorporate screen tones at first, but then ended up going for my more usual digital coloring approach. There are still many things that I think I could have worked on more, but it had already been sitting for so long I decided it just needed to be finished.

The piece is inspired by Donna Tartt’s novel The Secret History. Not exactly a timely reference anymore, but the book is enjoying continued popularity so I think it’s relevant. I wanted to keep all of the characters faces obscured to keep the illustration feeling quiet and mysterious. The gang is on a summer picnic, drunk in the shade of an old tree, one of the moments that Richard would have liked to hold on to. Before the murder. I hope it’s relatively clear who certain characters are to those who have read the books.

I did previously post some sketches of the characters in the novel which you can see here.

Dabble in The Open Web

The cover of the zine 'What is RSS?' The cover of the zine 'What is The Open Web?'

Alex and I over at DnA Artists have been working on a new series of informative zines we are calling ‘Dabble’ zines (currently under debate, but this is the working title for now). The zines are a way for us to explore and share information on topics that we are interested in and that we think would be helpful to other zinesters, creative people, and artists. My first contribution to the Dabble series is some zines on the Open Web.

Currently there are 2 zines available in the set, What is the Open Web? co-authored by Mike Amundsen, my dad and a well known API architect, and What is RSS?. These zines are small and short, meant to be simply a starting point for people to learn more about the topics.

Continue reading to hear about the style and process of the zines, and see some of the art from the interior.
